Showery Summits and Sunny Shucking

We've been fortunate enough to get a couple of brilliant trips to places we've already been to, over the last few weeks.

First up was a trip to the shores of Lake Pedder and an attempted summit of the 4,200ft/1400m Mount Anne. We drove in on a beautiful Saturday evening and were able to get an excellent view of Mt Anne as we drove along the road to the campsite. This took our breath away because last year at Easter when we visited the weather was somewhat less clement and we couldn't see much at all. (Mt Anne is the really pointy bit, the point to the right is Mt Eliza)

After a pleasant night's camp at the shores of Lake Pedder - which was a fascinating and unique seasonal lake until it was flooded by "the Hydro" several decades ago - we set off from 300m above sea level to get to the top of Mt Anne.IMG_2649

Unfortunately the weather really closed in and by the time we got to Mt Eliza about 1,000m higher than out starting point we really couldn't see much and were getting wet and cold. So after a total of four hours walking we were back where we started. Originally our plan had been to go up to the shelf and camp up there for the night by a tarn. Instead we went back to the campsite and actually relaxed for the rest of the day! Imagine that! Bloody lovely it was too, with a book and a fire. You can see a bit of Lake Pedder in the background here:

From the campsite we could see the Western Arthur Range - a rough week-long walk hopefully for another time.

We returned home on the Monday (public holiday) via a trip to the Styx Valley and the tallest hardwood trees in the world (apparently).

This made Ella rather happy as you can see!

... continuing the relaxing theme:

Last weekend we went on an excellent trip to beautiful Bruny Island. Juan from work is a seafood mad so he convinced us to join him to go Oyster and Mussel hunting on Bruny Island ... and we're rather glad he did.

Straight off the ferry from Kettering we hit the beach and gathered for about an hour

My first time collecting like this, but it was quite easy - you pop open an oyster (they're absolutely everywhere at low tide) and put the meat in a bottle of seawater for later. Look how big they were.

After an hour of pretty relaxed gathering we headed off with a big pot of mussels and our bottle of oysters. Down to Cloudy Bay, with a stop for the view at the Isthmus

.. and Adventure Bay for lunch. The weather was superb, so Cloudy Bay looked great.

We planned to go Abelone hunting in the rocks, but it was pretty rough, so left it. Juan and Dana headed back to Hobart, but Mike and Laura stayed to camp with us... which was hillarious.

... especially when Mike attempted to get oysters past the lemon in the bottle - we might have to rethink the packaging in future!

On the Sunday we enjoyed a good walk along the beach and up to East Cloudy Point through fire-ravaged bush demonstrating recovery - the weather was stunning again.

We headed home to Hobart with big tired smiles on our faces, and even had time to stuf our pockets with some mussels for dinner.

This weekend could be quite a let down after all this fun!
